“What is useful to get into your bag for one day around the city?”
Beside your own belongings like camera, phone, charger, map and other normal thing you can find in a bag when doing some Archeology research in a tourist bag, I’m going to give you what I found useful to have with me, when walking around Hong Kong. From the basic you have to carry on, with you, for any trip around the world. To the strict necessary pocket that can save your life because we all knows that Armageddon is never far away so to be ready is an obligation, here are coming few tips.

Joke aside it’s always great to have the basic, like a little first kit aid. With also basic medication (if you have further questions about the basic medication you have to bring around, good to ask your doctor before to leave your home land or/ and also at the pharmacy.) Antiseptic, bandage, something against mosquito, headache also add to this the less sexy one, heartburn anti diarrhea.

Not that I can relate to people being dirty. For those who walked in the streets in Japan, I do think you would find Hong Kong very messy, yet to me it’s not, it’s alive. But actually, like anywhere in the world, the only question you have to ask yourself is : do you know how many people goes to the toilet without washing their hands? Want to count them while you will be stuck on the porcelain seat? Yeah right.

Yeah seriously! I’m not saying this for in the case you are sneezing around like crazy but because if you are going to little restaurant and I’m not here talking about street stands, but real restaurant around the corner where you can sit for a few minutes. They don’t always give you away napkin or even simple tissue, while you can be sure to have toothpick on all the tables!

…that isn’t bigger than 15cm. Tales or legend?
No you aren’t bringing a lilliputian its beach towel but with this you can be assured to remove all the sweat you are going to lose around the city. Best than any Gym club, mostly if you come around from end of May to October, the humidity will drain you from a few liters. It’s also the best way to clean yourself and when staying in a hotel, a towel is fast cleaned and dry too.

Logical to get some when you come to a country where the sun is part of the game. But it’s not only when you go to the beach, sunburn can happen everywhere, don’t think because you are surrounded by Skyscraper that you are safe. Protect yourself from bad UV, don’t hesitate to take +50, being lower on the Equator line, the sun can be more bad than usual, even if clouds are in the sky.

It’s sunny and everything seems to be great for the day, you never know. The basic in your bag is actually this, no matter what the weather plan, the umbrella stay with you. Used to live in other country than tropical ones, I never faced change of weather as I did in Hong Kong. From wonderful sun to the kind of rain that make your shoes run away from you within few minutes.

Most restaurant now give you fork or even spoon to eat if you are unable to use them or have kids, but in case you go for the very typical restaurant and don’t want to use your fingers then it’s a good idea. (This to me is only an option clearly not mandatory.)

For those like me who cares about the impact you can have on the environment, this is a nightmare. Every single drink you gonna buy will be delivered with a straw. No one here drink without, from bottle to can even with glass in some restaurant. (soft drinks mostly). Better to bring yours around then.

…Is it safe to drink or not?
I’m not a doctor and I didn’t try more than what I will say. I still buy water in bottle, we have filter to our sink but still I don’t drink it. I have cats who loves water and make it boil two times before to give them something to drink. What can I say is, that drinks come with ice cubes in restaurant, I have never been sick with it. It really depend to where you go, the type of restaurant, snack, place you are drinking. Avoid to open your mouth under the shower at your hotel too because yes it says that the public water in Hong Kong is not drinkable yet.

…and their friends.
Another option that can be very handy and for the person that like to not collect plastic bag, the cotton bag is something you will see often around. For little errand, to buy some souvenir or just your picnic of the day, it’s a good idea to have one or two, knowing it doesn’t take too much space in your bag when folded.

You would think I’m crazy, telling you about sweating like hell then why carrying a jacket with you or any other clothes that would fit to cover yourself in an easy way and fast way ? Simple because outside you are roasting with the heat but then when going to eat somewhere or visiting museum or anything inside, will make you freeze. AC around the city is turned so forcefully that you will be glad to cover yourself even if it’s only for a couple of minutes.
To conclude: this are only tips that I find useful and also what I have with me and also noticed on most of the people living all the year around Hong Kong. I hope with this it makes your stay a little more enjoyable, have a good day.
